Does Spelling Matter?

One stduy sohewd taht as lnog as the frist and lsat letetr of a wrod wree in the corerct spot that the huamn brian cuold decphier waht was bieng wirtten.

Also known as, one study showed that as long as the first and last letter of a word were in the correct spot that the human brain could decipher what was being written.

This begs the question then… how important is spelling?

As a writer and someone who has worked in education my knee-jerk reaction is to say it is very important. Many of us can remember spelling tests where we had to memorize a long list of words and regurgitate them on paper on the spot. I once lost a short story contest because of a typo, so to them it seems it also matters.

However, as the world of technology and texting evolves, language is also changing. We now have slang words like “yeet” and “bae” that were completely made up and made popular by society. So if we can add words to language, and the human brain can tlel waht you are atetmpting to wirte even when the letetrs are mixed up… how important is spelling really?

I must be honest, writing those sentences with mixed up letters physically hurt my brain. It took conscious effort to scramble the letters out of the order I know them to be. I am a very fast typer whose fingers attempt to keep up with the fast thoughts pouring out of my brain. I am also no stranger to typos. When my thoughts are flying faster than I can keep up with, spelling goes out the window. If I pause to correct and double check each word the flow is stunted. Yes, I do go back and attempt to catch spelling mistakes, but I am also human and miss them from time to time. I apologize to those reading who have caught them before I have (side note: feel free to send me a message through the contact page if there is a glaring error I have missed). I promise I will make many more typing mistakes and I also promise to do my best to catch them. In the end, the most important thing is that you understand my main message or messages and hopefully you have been.

Today’s message is for all of us to be a little more forgiving of human error and a little more in awe of our beautiful brains and their abilities.

Happy Tuesday everyone! Stay warm out there, they’re, or their.
